How to give the gift of scent

There’s not much that’s more personal than how we, and the environment we live in, smells. And yet there is something so satisfying and special about gifting someone the perfect scent for their home. So, how to go about it in the right way? Beauty expert Jessica Diner explains…

If in doubt, go fresh

The good news is, getting someone a scent for their home is much easier than trying to guess what they might wish to wear on their skin. If you are gifting someone who is a) very picky or b) whose fragrance preferences you don’t know so well, opt for the ultimate crowd-pleaser that is the Seychelles collection. With notes of bergamot, orange, jasmine, amber and vanilla, it’s light, bright and fresh. Smelling like the Indian Ocean island, it immediately transports you to sunnier climes. What’s not to love?

Mix it up

The next thing to remember is that how someone would like their home to smell might not be the same for every single room in the house. So try gifting more than one item, but don’t buy the whole range of one scent. Living rooms lend themselves to a comforting candle, such as Tuscan Grove, while a Pomegranate diffuser would be welcoming in a restroom. Bedrooms are havens when scented with Calm mist and kitchens benefit from the food-smell-neutralising abilities of an Amalfi Lemon hand wash. Be creative in your selection and label each gift with where you envisage them in their home.

Follow their lead

If you do generally know the style of fragrances your recipient likes, then you can let that be your guide. For floral lovers, look no further than Santa Rosa. For wanderlusters, Seychelles or Tuscan Grove are your best bet. For snug home makers, consider Bergamot & Cedar and Oakmoss (it might sound like a distinctly wintry scent, but it’s actually ideal for those who love to be in green-smelling spaces, no matter the time of year).

Give the gift of good sleep

Another option is to take a more wellness-based approach. The Sleep candle, diffuser or soothing pillow mist are all ideal gifts for those who live a fast-paced life and are looking to make their home a sanctuary of chill, thanks to the relaxing blend of lavender, clary sage and calendula. Throw in a set of silk pillowcases, as well, to create a kit for the ideal night’s sleep.

Try some tech

You could also try an electronic diffuser. Choose the device based on the space you think they’ll use it in – do they need a larger one for a bigger room, or a portable one they can move around different areas? Then opt for a choice of three fragrance oils and add to a gift box for an enhanced scenting experience.

Tailor the final touches

Above all, be sure to personalise your gift. Go to town with all the gift wrapping, but know that nothing lands better than a handwritten note explaining why you have chosen the gift especially for them.
